Ever since I made the big move to Australia, there has always been one bucket list event I have desperately wanted to attend, Melbourne Cup Spring Races. From a foreigners perspective, Australia has numerous tourist attractions that make any trip to the land down under worthwhile, beaches, nature, cafe culture, animals and races! In my point of view, horse racing is a very European/UK traditional sport, where not only does it cater to those wanting to gamble and place bets, but also to those looking to attend for the fashion trends and celebrity appearances. Where I am from in Canada, horse racing is not at all a fashion-forward event with celebrities, not many desire to attend these sort of sporting events.Which is why attending the Melbourne Cup was something I HAD to do while living in Australia.
Of course, I planned to attend Kennedy Oaks day which is known as ladies day, where you can put together your best outfit and fanciest headpiece and head on out to the races with your girls! Unfortunately, none of my girls were free that day so my boyfriend and his friend joined me for the races. So we got our best outfits together, gathered ourselves and headed out to the Flemington Racecourse for Kennedy Oaks day!

My Spring Racing Outfit
For my spring racing look, I really wanted to wear a summer dress with a glam-floral headpiece. We couldn’t say no this perfect day to bring the DSLR with us for some fun outfit photos of at the race course! If you’re ever planning to make a trip to Melbourne Australia during the springtime, you sure can bet you will see many locals throughout the entire city dressed in their finest clothes and hats for these events.
Things I wish I knew before purchasing my race day ticket
Unfortunately, I was unaware of the circumstances that come with horse racing, especially in Australia. It is true that these events are very fun, festive, exciting and above all else, fashion-forward. However, they do have a dark truth behind them that even I was clueless about until the night before I attended this event. Horse racing for years has caused plenty of animal cruelty which goes unseen and hidden behind the glamour of the people and the fashion. Before you consider attending the next racing event, please do better than I did and educate yourself before purchasing your tickets. Racehorses are subjected to harsh treatments and internal injuries while horses that are eventually deemed “unfit” to race see even worse ends.
Please read this article to learn more before you plan to attend the races. Fashion & fun does not need to include animal cruelty.
